Shoulder Pain Q & A

What is shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain is a symptom that can arise because of a shoulder injury. Some shoulder injuries happen because you overuse the joint in sports or at work, while other injuries happen very suddenly due to trauma or impact. You can also sustain shoulder damage because of a degenerative condition, like arthritis.

Your shoulders are the most mobile joints in your body and have a wide range of motion. That is because they’re ball-and-socket joints, which can move in various directions, allowing you to reach, throw, and otherwise extend your arm. If you use your shoulders a lot for any reason, injuries can happen.

What are some common shoulder injuries?

Dr. Fisher and his team specialize in treating many of the most common shoulder injuries and conditions affecting joint function. Without treatment, acute injuries are at risk of becoming chronically painful or causing permanent instability.

Dr. Fisher and his team perform a full evaluation, including imaging tests, to diagnose:

  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Labral tears
  • Shoulder arthritis
  • Shoulder dislocations and instability
  • Humeral head fractures
  • Clavicle fractures
  • Pectoralis major rupture
  • Proximal biceps tendon rupture

Once you have a diagnosis, Dr. Fisher and the team decide which treatments to recommend that will stabilize the shoulder, promote timely healing, and improve symptoms like pain and stiffness.

How are shoulder injuries treated?

Dr. Fisher and his team create individualized care plans for shoulder injuries from overuse, athletics, trauma, and other causes. After a detailed evaluation of your injury, Dr. Fisher recommends appropriate treatments for its severity.

Most shoulder injuries respond well to non-surgical care, such as:

  • Rest
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
  • Steroid injections
  • Orthobiologics
  • Physical therapy
  • Immobilization with a brace or sling

There are cases where surgery is necessary to treat a shoulder injury such as severe damage, as well as any injury that doesn’t respond well to conservative care. Dr. Fisher specializes in shoulder procedures which include:    (Pott’s list except arthroplasty).

  • Shoulder arthroscopy
  • Rotator cuff repair
  • Superior capsular reconstruction
  • Shoulder labral repair
  • Shoulder instability surgery
  • Shoulder joint replacement
  • Shoulder impingement surgery
  • Biceps tenodesis
  • Cartilage repair and transplantation
  • Pectoralis major tendon repair
  • Clavicle fracture repair
  • Humerus fracture repair
